Lava reached homes in Grindavik (Iceland) on Sunday January 14. By 1 200°C, the houses did not last long. Three of them burned or were partially engulfed by molten rock. One of the owners, Hrannar Jon Emilsson, lost his new house, which he would have moved into if the town had not been evacuated two months earlier. “It’s surreal to watch your house disappear”he confides.
The town of Grindavik is full of cracks
In Iceland, an island accustomed to eruptions, lava had not reached homes for 51 years. After a first eruption on December 18, Iceland was on alert, and a dike is en under construction to protect Grindavik. “In addition to the houses destroyed by the lava, the city is now riddled with cracks, and two months after being first evacuated from their city, there is no sign that the residents will be able to return to settle there”comments Ambroise Bouleis, special correspondent in Reykjanes (Iceland).
