Homeless under the Ville-Marie highway | The camp can be dismantled, decides the Court of Appeal

The homeless people who have been camping for several months under the Ville-Marie highway, near downtown Montreal, have just failed in their attempt to further delay their eviction: the Court of Appeal dismissed their appeal, which opens the leads to the dismantling of the camp by the Ministère des Transports du Québec (MTQ).

In its last judgment, rendered on June 6, the Superior Court had set June 15 as the deadline for campers to leave the site, to allow the MTQ to carry out work under the highway overpass. The judge had considered that even if the campers did not have a permanent place to stay, the urgency of advancing the site justified the dismantling of the camp.

The eviction had however been suspended, the time that the Court of Appeal renders its decision.

The Mobile Legal Clinic, which defends the dozen homeless people living in tents there, asked for a delay until July 15 to allow organizations working with campers to find them permanent accommodation.

More details to come.
