The leader of Mouvement Montréal is opposed to the promise of his two competitors Valérie Plante and Denis Coderre to recruit 250 additional police officers to strengthen the workforce of the Police Department of the City of Montreal.
“The simple fact of announcing the addition of police officers without addressing the major concerns of Montrealers that this action would raise […] testifies to a flagrant lack of vision on the part of Plante and Coderre, ”Balarama Holness reacted in a press release on Wednesday.
Outgoing mayor Valérie Plante and the leader of Ensemble Montréal have each promised to hire 250 new police officers, while the metropolis is experiencing moments of insecurity with the upsurge in shootings.
Mr. Holness criticizes his competitors for ignoring “the root causes of police interventions” in disadvantaged neighborhoods, where visible minorities are likely to be profiled.
“Plante’s muscular dismantling of a homeless camp on Notre-Dame Street illustrates the lack of vision and compassion that his administration risks bringing to Montrealers who are looking for a new path,” denounced the Minister. head of Mouvement Montreal.
The candidate for mayor of Montreal prides himself on having a “cohesive and progressive” plan that focuses on community engagement, de-escalation and police training.
“This plan will provide the safety and quality of life that Montrealers deserve, while improving the conditions of citizens and those who work in the field of public safety,” added Mr. Holness.
