Hollande Urges Firm Action Against Trump’s Trade Aggression Regardless of Costs – February 27, 2025

In response to President Trump’s threats of significant tariffs, former French President François Hollande has called for a strong European reaction. He emphasized the need for Europe to impose retaliatory tariffs on American goods if Trump’s actions proceed, highlighting the potential for economic repercussions. Hollande criticized Trump’s aggressive tactics and their impact on transatlantic relations, asserting that Europe must stand firm against such challenges. Additionally, Economy Minister Eric Lombard affirmed the EU’s commitment to matching any U.S. tariff increases to protect its interests.

European Response to Trump’s Tariff Threats

In a recent aggressive statement directed at the European Union, the American president has once again raised the specter of substantial tariffs. This has ignited a call to action from former French President François Hollande, who asserts that Europe must counter Donald Trump’s “aggression” with a firm response. “He wants money, so we need to hit him where it hurts the most,” Hollande emphasized, urging that Europe must take a stand.

Firm Stance Against Aggression

During a visit to the Agricultural Show on February 27, Hollande expressed that in light of Trump’s commercial offensive, Europe needs to adopt a very tough approach. He stated, “We, the Europeans – especially the French – must ensure he feels the impact.” Trump recently claimed that European trade practices were designed to disadvantage the United States while threatening a 25% tariff on various agricultural and industrial goods.

Hollande warned that if such tariffs are implemented, Europe will have no choice but to reciprocate by imposing tariffs on American products, regardless of the financial implications. He also called for stricter regulations on major tech industries that support Trump, insisting they too should face repercussions. Highlighting Trump’s transactional nature, Hollande remarked, “He reacts only in terms of financial gain.” He criticized Trump’s approach, particularly regarding Ukraine, pointing out the inappropriate demands made by the president.

Hollande further articulated that Trump’s tactics are characterized by aggression and a clear intention to undermine the longstanding transatlantic relationship. He noted that attempts by Emmanuel Macron to persuade Trump during his first term have proven futile, as Trump continues to exhibit a hostile stance towards Europe. “He is no longer our ally,” Hollande concluded, indicating a shift in diplomatic relations.

In a related development, Economy Minister Eric Lombard stated at a G20 meeting in Cape Town that the EU would mirror any American tariff increases, asserting, “If the U.S. persists with these hikes, the EU will respond in kind.” He emphasized the necessity of protecting the interests of the European Union and its member states, even if it contradicts broader economic interests.
