Hockey Canada announced Saturday morning that its board chairman, Michael Brind’Amour, had tendered his resignation late the day before.
Brind’Amour said in a statement released by Hockey Canada that he made this decision after “listening carefully to the feedback from Canadians regarding the culture of our sport, that of our organization, our actions and our leadership.”
His mandate expired in November 2022, but he preferred to give up his post more quickly.
“It is essential to act immediately to address the significant challenges facing our organization and our sport and for which our action plan has been put in place. I would not be able to carry out this renewal and I have therefore announced my resignation from the board of directors”, he indicated.
Hockey Canada has been in hot water since this spring, when it was revealed the organization had settled out of court a lawsuit alleging sexual assault by eight players after a 2018 organization gala in London, Utah. Ontario.
After flimsy presentations to a parliamentary committee, several politicians have called for the resignation of Hockey Canada executives in recent weeks.
For its part, Hockey Canada announced earlier this week the appointment of Judge Thomas Cromwell to review the governance of the organization.
“I understand that our measures taken in recent weeks are part of the solution,” said Brind’Amour. I am confident that the recommendations will guide the organization towards the desired changes. »
The Board of Directors and members of Hockey Canada will meet over the next few days to determine next steps and appoint an interim chair.
