In the wake of allegations of sexual assault that have smeared Hockey Canada in recent months, the federation announced Thursday that a review of the functioning of the organization’s governance begins immediately.
The first recommendations are expected for Hockey Canada’s Annual General Meeting in November 2022.
She also mentioned that former Supreme Court Justice Thomas Cromwell will be responsible for the independent operation of the organization’s governance structures and systems.
Hockey Canada’s goal is to “raise expectations of all hockey stakeholders and promote positive behaviors from local programs to national teams,” the organization said in a statement.
Recommendations will address governance structures, systems, processes and personnel that meet the requirements and best practices of a National Sport Organization. This review will also cover the national equity fund.
Once the work is completed, Cromwell and his team will have to formulate a list of potential modifications or improvements to be made to the governance of the organization.
“A comprehensive governance review is a key step in regaining the trust of Canadians and ensuring that we have the right people and the right systems in place to implement our action plan to improve the sport of Canada,” noted Michael Brind’Amour, Chair of Hockey Canada’s Board of Directors. “We have heard the very clear message from the people and are committed to making the changes necessary to be an organization that lives up to their expectations,” he added.
