A 63-year-old man was violently attacked with a knife on Monday in the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve sector, while he was urinating in an alley. A 30-year-old suspect with a criminal record was arrested shortly after the incident and could be charged.
The Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) reports that it was first called to go to the corner of avenue d’Orléans and rue Ontario Est, around 11:45 a.m.
A 63-year-old man had just been attacked by a “sharp object”, presumably a knife, while he was urinating in an alley. He was seriously injured in the upper body, especially in the neck.
Then, around 3:50 p.m., at the end of the afternoon, police officers on patrol then located and arrested the suspect, who was still in the borough of Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve at the time.
The 30-year-old man, who has a criminal record “for various offences”, was transported to a detention center where he will be met by investigators. Charges of assault with a weapon causing bodily harm could be filed against him, among other things.
At the end of the day, there was no fear for the life of the victim. She was rushed to a hospital, however, given the severity of her injuries.
A large security perimeter was erected to let the investigators work, before being lifted shortly after the arrest. Forensic identification technicians were also called to the scene.
Video tapes from surveillance cameras belonging to nearby businesses were viewed by the police in particular, in order to retrace the sequence of events.
“For the moment, the reason for the attack remains unknown. We will also meet the victim as soon as possible, ”said agent Véronique Dubuc, the SPVM’s spokesperson on duty, on Monday. She added that several other “evidence” will be analyzed during the investigation, without going further.
