Basel Historical Museum – Music Museum
HISTORY AND TRADITION
With its three dependencies, the Basel Historical Museum is the most important cultural history museum in the Upper Rhine region. It collects, preserves, documents and researches significant testimonies of our cultural heritage for future generations. It educates visitors on the history of Basel and is also a place for discussions on the present and the future.
The Basel Historical Museum has the largest collection of musical instruments in Switzerland, with more than 3300 instruments. The Musikmuseum presents on 3 floors nearly 650 instruments covering five centuries of history, such as the oldest drum (1571), a richly decorated viola da gamba by Joachim Tielke (circa 1704) or an orchestrion “Weber-Unika” (1925) .
In the 24 former prison cells, themed exhibitions and interactive screens allow you to discover numerous musical examples and detailed information, on familiar instruments but also on curiosities from the world of music.
