Memorable first steps. Eric Roy’s players will remember this moment for a long time. At the Roudourou stadium in Guingamp, unable to host the Champions League in its Francis-Le Blé lair, Stade Brestois beat Sturm Graz (2-1) on Thursday, September 19, to begin the very first Champions League campaign in its history.
Midfielder Hugo Magnetti opened the scoring in the first half with a superbly controlled half-volley from the edge of the penalty area (23rd). Despite the Austrian equaliser at the worst possible moment, just before the break, on an own goal by Soumaïla Coulibaly (45th+1), Brest did not come out of their game. Summer recruit Abdallah Sima gave the Bretons the lead again (56th) by turning cleverly after a long ball into the area.
The victory is deserved for SB29, who dominated the match, finishing it with a numerical advantage after Dimitri Lavalée was sent off (89th) and could have made the break at the end of the match thanks to Kamory Doumbia (88th) then Jonas Martin (90th, 90th+3). Now that the counter is unlocked, Eric Roy’s players no longer have any reason to feel self-conscious. The next meeting will be against another Austrian club, RB Salzburg, on October 1 (6:45 p.m.).
