For the first round of 16 in their World Cup history, the Blues showed mastery. Opposed to Thailand in Bukhara (Uzbekistan), Friday September 27, the French won (5-2) and are continuing their journey. Suspected by the Thai coach of having voluntarily lost their last group match against Iran to access a more favorable table, the players of the French team remained impassive in the face of the controversy which surrounded them this week. They will face Paraguay in the quarter-finals, Monday September 30 (2:30 p.m.).
Very concentrated and sure of their strength, the French had possession of the ball and the biggest chances. Steve Bendali (8th) allowed the Blues to return to the locker room with a one-goal lead at the end of the first act.
In the second period, Mamadou Touré (23rd) gave the Blues a two-goal lead, but Thailand held on. A penalty from Suphawut Thueanklang (25th) reignited the suspense, before Narongsak Wingwon (33rd) – with a nice free kick – responded to the third French goal from Abdessamad Mohammed (29th). Without a goalkeeper at the end of the match to try to equalize, Thailand finally cracked, the French scoring two new goals in the empty cage, thanks to Souheil Mouhoudine (38th) and Ayoub Saadaoui (39th).
