“It was not easy” but “we finally fulfilled our mission”. The Egyptian President of COP27, Sameh Choukri, welcomed, on Sunday 20 November, the adoption, in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, of a final declaration calling for a reduction “fast” greenhouse gas emissions. This declaration also reaffirms the objective of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. Poor countries also leave Egypt with an agreement “historical” for a fund to compensate for the climate damage they are already suffering. However, this declaration remains, according to some, below expectations and the climate emergency. Follow our live.
Iconic “loss and damage” resolution. Compensation for the damage caused by climate change already suffered by the poorest countries was approved by the COP with the creation of a specific financial fund. “I really believe this is historic, welcomed Collins Nzovu, Minister of Environment of Zambiathis is a very positive result for 1.3 billion Africans.”
The European Union disappointed. The EU said it was “disappointed” by the lack of ambition in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. “What we have here is too short a step forward for the people of the planet. It does not provide enough additional effort from major emitters to increase and accelerate their emissions reductions”said European Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans.
The UN regrets a lack of ambition. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres regretted the lack of ambition of the agreement on the reduction of greenhouse gases. “We need to drastically reduce emissions now, and that’s a question this COP hasn’t answered”he estimated.
