June 22 marks National Organ Donation Awareness Day. Last year, 5,314 people were saved because of it. The 20 Hours went to meet twin sisters, one of whom lives thanks to the gift of the other.
Strolling through the streets of her neighborhood, savoring every corner of it, such a banal pleasure and yet for Colette Rey it has this taste of freedom found since she was transplanted with a kidney. “It’s the return to life, that is to say, after living in the hospital for seven years, I feel like I have come out of a tunnel“, she confides. In 2014, Colette learns that she has bone marrow cancer which is destroying both of her kidneys. His sister is at his side for operations, dialysis and chemotherapy.
A release for the two sisters
The two sisters are twins, 100% compatible. Catherine then donated her bone marrow to Colette in 2019, then two years later, a kidney transplant. The donor had more anxiety than her sister who was receiving her organs. “My anxiety was not being able to donate, not being healthy enough to be able to donate this kidney.“, says Katherine. In June 2021, the transplant is carried out, a release for the two sisters and their respective families.
