The 76-year-old artist was discovered lifeless this Sunday at the end of the morning at her Parisian home by her life assistant.
A few hours after the terrible news, tributes followed, from Françoise Hardy to Mika, and the announcement of a new song inspired by the icon, to the two daughters of JaneBirkin : Charlotte Gainsbourg and Lou Doillon. These “addressed” a few words to their mother, notably welcoming her “fierce battle against disease” in a press release sent to AFP. “Jane Birkin has passed away after 16 years of a fierce battle with illness. Since her stroke in September 2021, her family and wonderful caregivers have been by her side night and day”they wished to note.

Tributes that are still raining and which will no doubt continue for a few more weeks, even after the artist’s funeral, which is to take place on Monday July 24 in the strictest privacy and by invitation. But saying goodbye to a loved one can sometimes lead to misunderstandings. The proof, with the tribute paid by Serge Lama on his Twitter account this Monday, July 17. The interpreter of I’m sick indeed wrote a poem for Jane Birkin which caused some tension with Internet users.

Glory to Birkin in his tomb. Sadness! Like a fine rain. Serge LAMA”wrote the 80-year-old artist, arousing strong reactions on the social network.

“If I may say so, I believe it was Jane Birkin who ‘invented’ Gainsbourg. Or rather, she ‘liberated’ him and encouraged him to explore his most original sides”, “‘And Gainsbourg invented Birkin’ , how to say that you are sexist without saying that you are sexist”, “Nobody invents anything. Nevertheless, Serge Lama did indeed wish to denounce these eternal misogynistic clichés. Indeed, when a woman of Jane Birkin’s stature dies or achieves success, she is almost automatically confined to being “the muse of”, like Brigitte Bardot with Roger Vadim. In fact, a man is always associated with them to “explain” the success of a career. Compared to all these references “misogynist”, the singer wished to point out that Jane Birkin as well as “BB”, are well “two spearheads that carry high the high feminine image” not having needed a male half to be successful. A large part of the singer’s community understood him well and did not fail to thank him for his adorable words addressed to the missing icon.
