Nearly a year after the death of legendary hockey player Guy Lafleur, Highway 50 may soon be renamed in his name.

At least that’s what the minister responsible for the Outaouais region, Mathieu Lacombe, suggested at a press briefing on Thursday morning.
Asked about this, he replied that we were going to have a beautiful spring, suggesting news in the coming weeks.

The desire to pay tribute to Guy Lafleur is very present in Outaouais, the native region of the blond demon. Moreover, the day after his death, Prime Minister François Legault had even hinted that his government was open to making a gesture to honor Guy Lafleur.
However, it is necessary to wait at least one year before the death of an individual to be able to name a place in his honor, according to the rules of the Commission de toponymie du Québec.
Guy Lafleur died on April 22, 2022 from lung cancer. He was 70 years old. He is also a native of the municipality of Thurso, where Highway 50 passes.
