Christmas and end-of-year holidays: speeding violations are highly monitored
Christmas and end-of-year celebrations: speeding is highly monitored – (France 2)
The police are on the lookout on the roads between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. For this next holiday weekend, speeders and drivers will be hunted down.
A few days before the festive New Year weekend, the roads should be actively monitored. The gendarmerie is already present at certain tolls such as that of Saint-Arnoult-en-Yvelines, in Île-de-France. On a section limited to 110 km/h, the police are on the lookout for drivers on the holiday highway. “Once they pass the radar, they think the highway is clear and they speed up“, explains Jonathan Rey, pilot of the Yvelines rapid intervention team.
3,267 road deaths
After spotting an English vehicle, driving at more than 30 km/h above the limit, the gendarme and his colleagues caught up with the driver in less than two minutes. “I didn’t think I would drive so fast“, confides the Englishman, after receiving a fine of 135 euros. Last year, some 3,267 deaths were recorded on the road and in 26% of cases, the cause was excessive speed.
