Antoine Dupont’s teammates won France’s first gold medal in the final of the Olympic tournament against Fiji.
A historic victory! Facing Fiji in the final of the Olympic rugby 7s tournament, the French won 28-7 on Saturday, July 27 at the Stade de France. After Shirine Boukli’s bronze medal and Luka Mkheidze’s silver in judo, Antoine Dupont and his teammates gave France its first gold medal in these Olympic Games.
Facing the two-time reigning Olympic champions, this French team, which had never won a gold medal at the Games, had a date with history. After a balanced first half and a score of 7-7 at halftime, the Blues produced a near-perfect second half. Thanks to a try by Aaron Grandidier just after the restart, assisted by an immense Antoine Dupont, who scored two more goals at the end of the game, the French team finished the match with a 21-point lead over the Fijians.
