Highlights of 2023 | Zelensky’s visit to Ottawa becomes an international controversy

The visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the Canadian Parliament plunged Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government into embarrassment in September.

On the sidelines of the Kyiv strongman’s speech, the parliament gave a standing ovation to a former Nazi fighter, Yaroslav Hunka (98), who had been invited by the Speaker of the House of Commons, Anthony Rota.

The affair was taken up by Vladimir Putin who described Mr. Rota – who resigned shortly after – as an “idiot”.

“It is absolutely disgusting that everyone applauded this Nazi, especially the president of Ukraine, who has Jewish blood in his veins,” the Russian president continued.
