In hot weather, some people do not hesitate to literally take refuge underground, because it is cooler there. This is why the giant abyss of Cabrespine, in Aude, is a great success. It is one of the ten most beautiful caves in Europe and the temperature is 14°C all year round.

To forget the 34°C outside, nothing beats a chill. Wednesday August 3, many of them had the same idea in the giant Cabrespine chasm (Aude). There is a two hour wait to access the site. It is 14°C all year round, 20°C cooler than outside. “I like it better there because it’s cooler”testifies a little girl.

In a single day, the site will achieve the turnover of a winter month. The visits are linked every fifteen minutes to discover the thousand-year-old concretions. “When you arrive in this room, it’s impressive and pleasant”says a woman. Some would like to stay there. Going down 200 m below, you can also try the tree climbing, a variation of tree climbing without trees and in the cool. Since its opening to the public, the temperature of the sinkhole has remained stable, but scientists fear that eventually it will increase as on the surface.
