Nine states made abortion illegal as soon as the Supreme Court ruling was announced on Friday. But the list of territories concerned will quickly grow.

They did not wait to act. Nine American states announced on Friday June 24 that they had completely banned voluntary termination of pregnancy (abortion), in the wake of a Supreme Court ruling. In a decision anticipated for several months, the highest court of the United States reversed its own jurisprudence of 1973 and revoked the constitutional right to abortion. It thus leaves each State free to legislate on this question.

Thirteen conservative states had anticipated this reversal by adopting trigger laws, laws that prohibit abortion and automatically come into force after the reversal of Roe v. Wade of 1973. These texts have been applied since Friday in seven of these territories, lists the New York Times*. The Minister of Justice of Missouri thus welcomed, less than ten minutes after the announcement of the Supreme Court, that his State became “the first” to completely ban abortion, reports Newsweek*. The law does not provide for an exception in the event of rape or incest.

In other states, such as Idaho or Tennessee, trigger laws will come into effect no later than 30 days following the Supreme Court’s decision, explains the Guttmacher Institute*. This is also the case in Texas, where the right to abortion is already severely limited: it is currently only authorized within a legal period of six weeks, a threshold below which most pregnancies are not yet known. .

Alabama and Wisconsin also became two of the first states on Friday to completely ban abortion. The reversal of the Supreme Court makes it possible to apply again laws which were in force before the judgment of 1973, specifies the New York Times. In total, half of the 50 American states will ban or severely limit the right to abortion after the reversal of the highest court in the country, according to the Guttmacher Institute*.
