In Hérault, the municipalities of Frontignan and Vias are victims of coastal erosion. The beaches are receding, threatening homes.
In Vias (Hérault), the beach disappears year after year, eaten away by erosion. An artificial riprap was built so as not to submerge the homes. “We have no other means of protecting ourselves (…) the sea is moving inexorably”, worries Jean-Raymond Richaud, resident of Vias (Hérault). Residents gathered collectively, for fear that their homes would be dismantled by the authorities. They want to stay at home, at all costs.
A study to map the evolution of the coastline
The collective is awaiting the results of a new experiment launched by the town hall. These are nets installed in the sea to retain sand and fight against erosion. In the town of Frontignan (Hérault), the beach has receded in places and a restaurant had to be destroyed. A study has just begun to map the evolution of the coastline by 2050 and 2100. Other coastal areas should be ceded to the sea.
