While this weekend Arion, Mathieu Lussier and pianist Élisabeth Pion will present a Piano concerto by Hélène de Montgeroult (1764-1836), recordings of the latter’s piano music are multiplying. This composer, certainly among the most interesting revealed in recent years, was revealed to us by Edna Stern. The pianist had made choices to show how Montgeroult, based on classicism, could sometimes evoke Scarlatti and announce Schubert. A new way to explore is to take everything and make your own choice. The possibility is offered by two integrals of Piano sonatas by Montgeroult now available: one by Nicolas Horvath published in November 2021 by Grand Piano and the other by Simone Pierini. Major and notable difference: the instrument, a Steinway captured quite hard for Horvath and a superb pianoforte, designed between 1800 and 1810 by Haselmann, for Pierini. Two competent pianists, but a good dose of extra charm here.
