hedges and their different uses

The history of hedges is lost in the mists of time. Hedges arrived with agriculture, they were used to park livestock. Bocage hedges appeared in the Middle Ages to delimit plots, but today they tend to disappear with mass agriculture.

Gardeners have taken over and now offer different types of hedges, with very diverse types of shrubs.

  • The hedges : they are often composed of conifers or tuyas. The advantage, they keep their foliage in winter and therefore permanently hide you from the outside gaze. They may require pruning.
  • Flowering hedges : by planting different shrubs that bloom in different seasons, you can enjoy the colors and scents of your hedge for a very long time.
  • Evergreen hedges : here too you will mainly find conifers, which remain green all year round, but you can also use bamboo or laurel sauce.
  • Fruit hedges : with them all the advantages, flowers, fruits, little pruning according to the desired height.
  • Hedges without maintenance (or almost!): they are made up of slow-growing shrubs that rarely exceed two meters in height. Be careful to make the right choices, and then all you have to do is let it grow.
  • fast growing hedges : for this type of hedge, allow plenty of room or the possibility of very regular pruning, this is the case for fir, hornbeam, cypress.
  • defensive hedges : we will use prickly shrubs like Berberis or Pyracanthas. It’s very pretty… but from afar.
