(Havana) Three people died due to heavy rains that fell in eastern and central Cuba, causing extensive material damage and leading to the evacuation of thousands of inhabitants, authorities announced on Monday.


The rains, which began on Thursday, eased on Monday, but relief operations continue in several provinces in the east of the island (Holguin, Camagüey, Granma, Santiago de Cuba and Las Tunas) as well as in the province of Sancti Spiritus, in the center of the country.

Civil Defense of Camagüey reported Monday in a statement that a 56-year-old man was found dead at a roadblock and that the death of another man, aged 67, is under investigation. investigation.

In Granma, nearly 7,500 people were evacuated from their homes, while in the province of Las Tunas some 700 hectares of crops were devastated.

Granma authorities announced on Friday the death by drowning of a 60-year-old man.

“We will get up, no one will be forgotten,” Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel promised on Sunday.

Bridges, roads and sewage systems were damaged by the rains while trains heading east from Havana were cancelled.
