Heavy rain and wind: Eastern Quebec must prepare for a storm

Mother Nature will not be kind to residents of Eastern Quebec who will have to prepare to face heavy rain and a lot of wind for the day on Monday.

Several weather alerts have been issued by Environment Canada for these regions of La Belle Province, which will not all receive the same treatment.

Indeed, a storm surge warning was published for the sectors of Blanc-Sablon, Natashquan and Chevery, on the Lower North Shore, but also towards Chandler and Gaspé, in Gaspésie.

“An intense depression coming from the American east coast will cause violent winds,” the federal agency mentioned in a bulletin published late Sunday morning. “The combination of these winds and the fact that we are currently in a period of medium-range tides could cause waves to break along the coast.”

On the Îles-de-la-Madeleine side, strong winds are expected from Monday afternoon, ranging from 80 to 100 km/h, which could cause damage to buildings and even service outages.

Snow or rain?

In the greater Quebec region on Monday, Environment Canada is forecasting snow accumulation of up to 10cm with winds reaching 50 km/h at midday.

The North Shore will not be left out, even if the weather conditions will vary rapidly along Route 138. If Sept-Îles will receive 40 to 60 mm of rain until the end of the day Monday, Baie-Comeau will be under snow with 15 to 20 cm expected.

Snowflakes will also be present in the area of Rimouski and Kamouraska, while Matane and Amqui will instead be under showers which could turn into freezing rain by Monday evening.

The rest of Quebec will not escape the bad weather either. Snow will appear in Estrie, but also in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, Charlevoix and Beauce.

Due to milder temperatures, umbrellas will have to be out in the areas of Quebec, Centre-du-Québec and Montérégie, while the rain will turn into snow during the day.
