Hail struck the Gard twice. After a night of anguish, the farmers discovered, Wednesday, August 17, the damage to their crops. An apricot grower lost almost all of his fruit.
Faced with the force of the storm, the apricots of Dominique Linsolas, a farmer in Bellegarde (Gard), did not resist. “The apricots are still almost immature, so the hailstone had to be big to be able to make this impact, and get into the flesh of the fruit”, he explains. A year of work has just been destroyed overnight. In Jonquières-Saint-Vincent (Gard), Salvatore Zoroddu limited the damage with anti-hail nets, but not all of his apricots were protected.
In Aigue-Mortes (Gard) too, hail raged. Michel Sabatier’s olives have suffered. “I who intended to market them in olives for the mouth, for this year, it’s grated”, he laments. To be sold whole and more expensive, the olives must not have traces. Part of its operation was spared, but not enough to save the balance sheet for the year.
