Heat wave: nursing homes adapt to high temperatures

The elderly require special attention in hot weather. The heat wave which is affecting France is therefore forcing the nursing home to take some precautions.

In a nursing home of Saint-Maur-des-Fosses (Val de Marne)the high temperatures added to the lack of staff put the nurses under pressure. “The situation today in all establishments, in all home services in France, is extremely tense because we know that we are in a heat wave. So we must strengthen support for the elderly, while we lack professionals”alert Pascal Champvertpresident of the association of directors serving the elderly.

Near Orleans (Loiret)them nursing home prepare for the heat wave. Close the shutters, draw the curtains: at 92, Robert applies the instructions. Faced with rising temperatures, the menus are adapted: the soup was thus replaced by melon. Montpellier (Herault)the instruction is to hydrate the residents well, with water or grenadine. Since the 2003 heat wave, the nursing home must have an air-conditioned collective space.
