The heat wave affecting France puts danger the most vulnerable, especially the elderly. Room cooling, water distribution, increased monitoring: everything is in place to protect them from the heat.
The devices for coping with episodes of high heat are now well established. In L’nursing home Les Fougères, in Migné-Auxances (Vienna)in the morning, the refreshments trolley passes of room to room. Despite the shutters that have remained closed since the day before, in the bedrooms, the mercury already indicates 26°C at midday on Thursday, June 16. Many establishments have supplemental fans for enclosed spaces.
For common areas, as required by law, each establishment must offer at least one air-conditioned room. In a nursing home from Bretteville-sur-Odon (Calvados)personnel are mobilized. The basic instructions are recalled, because the next three days will be difficult, and the habits of the residents will be upset. The fight against high heat also concerns the kitchen: the menus are thus adapted. The 2003 heat wave caused the premature death of nearly 20,000 people. Today’s devices will make it possible to face the heat strokes of the future more serenely.
