After several heat waves during the months of July and August, new heat records were broken in September.

Monday, September 12, the western facade of France is experiencing a new heat wave. Records were broken for this month in 116 cities with 35.1°C in Nantes (Loire-Atlantique), 36.5°C in Albi (Tarn) and 39.2°C in Mont-de-Marsan (Landes) . In this city, residents and workers are suffering from this new peak of heat. This exceptional situation for the season is due to the phenomenon of the heat plume. Thus, hot air rises from the Maghreb to France. Fed by a depression, this warm air remains blocked on the southwest.

With climate change, this kind of phenomenon, which is classic, is taking on an unusual scale. “These records that have been broken are explained by this context of climate change, which does not create new atmospheric dynamics, but which amplifies their effects”, explains Christelle Robert, forecaster at Météo France. Temperatures are expected to drop from Tuesday, September 13.
