The latest Copernicus report is alarming. 2021 was one of the hottest years on record in 150 years.

August 2021, in Spain. The mercury rose to 47 degrees, breaking absolute temperature records. Same observation in Sicily. The inhabitants of the island saw the thermometer climb, reaching a high of 48 degrees. An exceptional heat wave in Europe, monitored by Copernicus, the European Earth monitoring system. “2021 is unfortunately one of the hottest years in our records, which are over 150 years old”confides Vincent-Henri Peuch, director of atmospheric monitoring at Copernicus.

Heat accompanied by persistent drought, especially in the Mediterranean. Consequence: nearly 800 ha went up in smoke this summer. Episodes of late frosts, rising seas… climate change with a known cause. “It’s because of the concentrations of greenhouse gases”, recalls Vincent-Henri Peuch. A very critical situation, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
