Heart attack in mid-flight: pilot thought his instructor was joking

A flight instructor died of a heart attack alongside a pilot who thought he was ‘pretending to sleep’.

The event occurred on June 29 over Blackpool Airport in England. However, a report published on February 9 revealed that the pilot thought that his instructor was playing a joke on him.

The pilot had asked the instructor to accompany him on this flight since the weather conditions were “above his personal limit for flying alone”. However, he still wanted to fly the circuit to stay in good standing with his flying club’s requirements, Global News reported.

When the 57-year-old instructor’s head fell back, the pilot thought he was pretending to be asleep. It was only after landing that he realized something was wrong.

It was then that he alerted airport emergency personnel who attempted to resuscitate the man without success.

An autopsy revealed that the instructor had died of acute heart failure possibly caused by diffuse atheromatous disease.
