In France, more than one child in a thousand is born deaf. Still little known, but effective, implants now allow them to hear. On National Hearing Day, 12/13 met a family whose child has just received an implant.

For Grégoire’s parents, it’s a small miracle. At 13 months, he can hear and even begins to speak. Grégoire was screened from birth, three months after multiple tests, with a “profound bilateral deafness“, describes his father, Étienne Estace. For his mother, Pauline Estace, the announcement was “the cold shower. We immediately wondered what will happen, what should we do, should we implement it…”

Impressive results

The decision came very quickly. The second implant has just been installed. The three-hour operation involves placing the implant in the inner ear to stimulate the auditory nerve. The next day, the ENT team checks the result. “He hears. It is not the same quality of sound as a hearing child, because it is not an acoustic sound that he receives, but an electrical signal“, explains surgeon Émilie Blois. Last year, 75 children were implanted at Robert-Debré Hospital in Paris.
