15 years after the patient health hospital law, medical deserts remain a headache. This week of June 12, access to care is once again under debate in the Assembly. The free installation of doctors is in the line of fire.

Quickly finding an appointment with a specialist, the mission is difficult at a time of medical desertification. Should doctors be forced to settle in more deserted areas? The Assembly must decide this week. The idea is defended in an amendment by the socialist Guillaume Garot, supported by more than 200 deputies. This obligation would therefore mainly affect new doctors.

The unions are standing up against the proposal

The horizon is unattractive for medical students. “We already have studies that are long enough and that drain our energy a lot, so I find it quite unfair in itself to indirectly force us to go and work in medical deserts”, judges a student. According to the unions, this could discourage young people from entering the medical field. They are headwind against the proposal.
