In order to combat medical deserts, the SNCF plans to install teleconsultation booths in 300 French stations. A divisive idea.

Take your train and take the opportunity to consult a doctor. The idea could soon see the light of day in nearly 300 French stations with medical teleconsultation boxes. The SNCF aims to facilitate access to care. It targets stations located in medical deserts. Carry Le Rouet (Bouches-du-Rhône) could benefit from the system. In France, 30% of the population lives in a medical desert.

“A doctor at your fingertips”

To facilitate access to care, the patient will not be alone in front of their screen. “He will be greeted by a nurse. The nurse will do the constants. (…) The remote doctor will be able to listen if there is a heart difficulty for example“, explains Raphaël Poli, the general director of SNCF Retail & Connexions. Consult at the station, the idea appeals to local residents. “I think it’s a good idea to have a doctor on hand“, judges a woman.

In Île-de-France, 62% of the population lives in a medical desert. A train station could be eligible, but GP unions warn against this project. These teleconsultation booths could be put in place by 2028.
