The government, like the doctors’ unions, were opposed to it.
5,000 fewer doctors in 10 years
87% of French territory is affected by medical deserts. When he is not at his medical office, Doctor André Dubois, 64, makes house calls. As retirement approaches, he worries about the future of his many patients. Being a country doctor involves a pace that no longer attracts students. “Today, we young people are no longer ready to work as much as the doctors before. (…) We want to have a family life”explains Maël Lherm, medical student. France has lost 5,000 doctors in the space of 10 years.
