The flu continues to progress in France. The majority of the country is in an epidemic phase.
In a pharmacy in Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône), the test results are unmistakable: the flu is there. In total, the epidemic of flu affects 11 regions, out of the 13 in mainland France. Out of 100 procedures performed by SOS Médecins, nearly ten are linked to flu symptoms, the majority to flu herself. This is twice as much as at the beginning of December.
Decline in vaccination
The fault is the winter weather, the end-of-year celebrations which encourage the mixing of populations and contaminations, but also a decline in vaccination, from year to year. “The recall was very insufficient, since in particular for the population aged 60-80, we were around 30%”, observes Doctor Benjamin Davido, infectious disease specialist and Covid-19 referent medical director at the Raymond Poincaré hospital in Garches (Hauts-de-Seine). According to doctors, the peak in cases of flu could only take place in February. In the meantime, they recommend respecting barrier gestures.
