“We perhaps need a political takeover and to get out of the healthcare professionals’ circle a bit”, estimated Friday January 12 on franceinfo Frédéric Valletoux, Horizons deputy for Seine-et-Marne, former president of the French Hospital Federation. The new government of Gabriel Attal marks a return of politics. The former Chiraquian Catherine Vautrin, president of the metropolis of Reims, becomes Minister of Labor in place of Olivier Dussopt. Its portfolio is also extended to Health and Solidarity.

“I am very favorable to there being a political takeover, that is to say elected officials who are not necessarily from the world of health. There is no need to necessarily be from the world of health to be able to deal with health topics“, he said. Especially since there is an emergency. He calls for a proactive policy to repair access to care: “We are breaking away from a myth of wanting to involve doctors or health professionals on health issues. We have seen it in the past, it is not necessarily where we have the most proactive and more daring at the head of the ministry”, he pointed out.

On the usefulness of experience in politics

In an increasingly tough political fight, particularly in the National Assembly, having experienced ministers is necessary, according to him: “Having elected officials who are experienced, who are used to political discussions, to seeking consensus and used to politically addressing issues, we see that it is useful,” he said. Moreover, Frédéric Valletoux remarks “the ministers who have been most successful in recent months are those ministers who have this political experience.”

The former president of the French Hospital Federation sent a message to health professionals: “If we really want this system to be reformed, we need proactive, courageous decisions that will shake up habits where the interplay of professionals meant that we were often content to purr and let situations persist.” he explained.
