Carpooling for ambulance vehicles could become mandatory in September. A way for Health Insurance to save money, which nevertheless raises the fear of tiring patients and exposing them to contamination.
A habit. To go to the clinic once a week, a patient met by the France Télévisions teams shares his ambulance. A carpool that he likes and which allowed him to make connections. The paramedic explains that carpooling saves time when the patients he transports live close to each other.
Risks for patients
Sharing your ambulance or taxi will soon be an obligation for patients transported seated, unless otherwise advised by the prescribing doctor. Transporters will have to pick up two to three patients, with a detour of up to 30 km. Patients with long-term illnesses, undergoing chemotherapy or dialysis fear the risk of contamination and fatigue. Health Insurance hopes to save 150 million euros before the end of 2025 thanks to carpooling, which could become compulsory next September.
