The World Health Organization now considers aspartame to be classified as a possible human carcinogen. WHO says further studies are needed to clarify the situation.

In diet sodas, chewing gum, sugar-free sweets… Aspartame is present in more than 2,500 food products in Europe. However, this fake sugar would present a health risk. “We are not very informed. We don’t talk about it more than that”, underlines a local resident.

Aspartame has just been placed as a possible carcinogen by the World Health Organization. However, it has not decided to lower the maximum recommended threshold, which is already very high. For a person weighing 70 kilos, the recommendation is not to exceed 2.8 grams of sweetener per day, the equivalent of ten cans per day.

WHO calls for vigilance for children

The WHO calls for the greatest vigilance with regard to children. “Children can be at high risk because consuming early in life habituates you”, says Dr. Francesco Branca, director of the health nutrition department at the WHO. Appeared in the 80s, aspartame is a controversial food additive. A French study conducted on 100,000 adults since 2009 shows a common link with cancer.
