Diabetes progresses. A study published in The Lancet magazine predicts 1.3 billion patients in 2050. The point with Damien Mascret on the set of 20 Hours, Monday June 26.
France is not spared by the progression of diabetes in the world. “The number of diabetics continues to increase in France. There were 1.8 million in 1999, 2.8 million in 2016 and over 3.5 million in 2020. We are talking here about type 2 diabetes, the one that most often appears after the age of 50.“, describes Damien Mascret, present on the set of 20 Hours, Monday, June 26.
The aging of the population in question
This explosion is partly due to the aging of the population. “But especially to the increase in obesity. We have gone from 8.5% of the French population suffering from obesity in 1997, to 17% of the population in 2020″, he continues. But what is the relationship between obesity and diabetes? “It is a hormone: insulin (…). Unfortunately, in case of obesity, insulin is less effective, we speak of insulin resistance. Result: too much sugar remains in the blood and will damage the cardiovascular system“, explains Damien Mascret.
