Thursday June 22 is National Organ Donation Day. On this occasion, the 12/13 teams met Dominique, a father who is going to donate a kidney to his daughter Chanel.

Chanel, 21, has suffered from an orphan disease since birth. With his father, Dominique, they are very close. But, he is about to take a rare step. To cure Chanel’s severe kidney deficiency, Dominique will give her a kidney. “For me, it was natural. I saw no other solution. […] Chanel has already suffered a lot in her life. We wanted to avoid this phase of dialysis as much as possible.assures Dominique. He will make a donation during his lifetime to make up for the lack of organ donation from deceased persons.

A follow-up at the Lille University Hospital

In France, 10,000 new patients are registered each year on the transplant waiting list. For Chanel, everything came to a head last January when her condition deteriorated. Her sister Chloe also feared the prospect of heavy dialysis. “She couldn’t do dialysis. It’s too long, too intrusive, too laborious”, she believes. For four years, the family has been cared for by a medical team at the Lille University Hospital (North). This allows for follow-up and support in case of doubts.
