The sailboat “Perseverance” will sail in the polar waters of Antarctica in preparation for Operation Polar Pod.
Here is the sailboat “Perseverance” baptized. Its goal: to ensure every two months the crew changes and the supply of the “Polar Pod”, a vertical ship 100 meters high, without engine, which will allow to study the ocean Southern. But the sailboat will not only be used for supplies, it will also take samples from the ocean to allow IPCC scientists to refine their climate forecasts.
“We are going to help feed climate forecasting models with in situ data”
“We are going to help feed climate forecasting models with in situ data, taken from the ocean and the local atmosphere”, says Hervé Le Goff, research engineer at the CNRS. The “Perseverance”, the largest ocean-going sailboat in the world, will go back and forth between the “Polar Pod” platform and the mainland for three years. The Southern Ocean is known to be a rough area and of course very cold. “Perseverance” will set sail on Thursday for the Southern Ocean, to prepare for Operation Polar Pod, which should begin in 2025.
