A resident of Lanildut in northern Finistère, wishing to connect his house to the electricity network, was refused his deposit check because it was denominated in Breton.
The affected customer has wiped a first refusal by mail from Enedis with return of his check for cause “anomaly with regard to the amount in words”, then a second refusal by mail because the check had to be written in French.

False, explains the collective Ai’ta! who campaigns for the recognition of the linguistic rights of the Bretons. “According to the Geneva Convention of 1931, _a check can be written in any language_.”
From unfortunately common refusals which the association regrets. “The company must respect its customers, and in addition, by providing a public service like this, it must set an example.”
Enedis apologizes
Contacted by France Bleu Breizh Izel, the Regional Management of Enedis Bretagne says “sorry” of the situation. “The refusal to cash a check drawn up in the Breton language is the consequence of a _unfortunate disregard of this right_.” The company contacted the unhappy customer to return his check for immediate cashing.
