The oldest Prime Minister of the Fifth Republic, Michel Barnier, already has his fans. Former ski champion Jean-Claude Killy, former head of the Organising Committee for the 1992 Albertville Olympic Games alongside the new head of the French government, assured AFP on Thursday 5 September that the man he considered his “brother” was not “concerned only about France”.

“One of the keys to his success is his total integrity and his uprightnesssaid the triple gold medalist at the Grenoble Games in 1968. He has thick skin and stamina. He is only concerned about France and this will be his last job. He is not an opportunist.”

Before continuing on the origin of their links: “We worked for eleven years in the same office in Albertville. It allows you to get to know people. We got along very poorly at the beginning, and we came out of this adventure as brothers.”

Jean-Claude Killy said to himself “persuaded” that the former European Commissioner had the qualities required for this position, which he is taking up in an unprecedented context. “He shows an extraordinary capacity for dialogue, he has an infinite capacity for listening, which is rare. And he has team spirit, the real kind, without putting himself forward.”judges the former member of the International Olympic Committee, aged 81.
