“Anything less than an indeterminate sentence of imprisonment will not protect the public from the accused committing murder or [blessure sérieuse]», Determined judge Flavia K. Longo, at the Montreal courthouse.
The magistrate ruled in favor this month of a Crown request to impose such a sentence and declare Nakiba Adams a dangerous offender.
Under the terms of the Criminal Code, the profile of the 40-year-old man will therefore be re-evaluated by the Parole Board of Canada after seven years of incarceration.

The same exercise will then be repeated every two years.
In that case, Adams was convicted of inflicting bodily harm and aggravated assault on his grandparents during a confrontation in October 2019.
Serious injuries
When he arrived at their home, Nakiba Adams’ grandmother told him that he was not welcome. Tension between the accused and the octogenarian couple quickly escalated.
At one point, “her grandmother held back her arms [de l’accusé]while his grandfather rushed at him and tried to hit him in the face,” relates the judgment.
Adams, after recovering from a fall, violently punched both victims in the face, knocking them to the ground. The man and woman, who were aged 83 and 81 at the time, suffered significant injuries, including facial fractures.
“Although he is her grandson, [la dame] fears him. The bump that appeared on his head after the incident is still there and will remain so. It is a constant reminder of what happened that day,” we learn in the judgment.
Dozens of convictions
Nakiba Adams is far from having her first run-ins with the law. Since 2004, the man who describes himself as a professional athlete has accumulated more than thirty convictions.
Adams’ offenses range from threats, assault with a weapon, assault, breach of conditions, break and enter and obstruction of justice.
We also note that in May 2021 he stabbed a correctional officer with a pencil, inflicting injuries on his face and eye.
Explosive temperament
The Montrealer, who grew up in a violent family environment, is also said to have committed more than 74 disciplinary violations in jail between 2019 and 2022.
According to a probation officer who assessed Adams’ risk of recidivism and needs, the offender has anger problems and places blame on his victims.
“[L]The accused’s inability to manage his emotions and curb his explosiveness goes without saying, since he responded to his grandparents using extreme violence and showed himself indifferent to the reasonably foreseeable consequences of his actions which caused them lasting injuries,” said the court.
