(Washington) A 39-year-old Hawaiian man died from his injuries after a shark attack in the waters off Maui, Hawaii, local police said.
Jason Carter, a surfer according to local media, was attacked Saturday morning, Maui police said in a statement.
When police arrived, he was transported by jet ski to shore by rescue workers.
“Once on land, life-saving measures were taken” until he could be transported to hospital, the police statement said, but the surfer “later succumbed to his injuries.”
Authorities closed the beach and put up warning signs about the presence of sharks.
Hawaii News Now reported that water conditions were “mixed” with high waves at the time, noting that it was the first fatal shark attack in Hawaiian waters in 2023.
