“Havre-Saint-Pierre”, Abla Farhoud | The duty

Fifty years after the death of his sister, Karam asks his brother Farid to travel from Montreal to Havre-Saint-Pierre, where Salwa died in his arms. And it is there, in this restricted space, that the two characters revisit their past in Lebanon, unravel the stitches of time, each tell their story in their own way. From the death of the father which caused the uprooting of part of the family to the abandonment experienced by Karam and the premature death of this little sister, the story of these siblings, both deconstructed and so united, is a homage to memories and to what builds us. Last text written by Abla Farhoud who died in 2021, Haven-Saint Pierre skillfully mixes Lebanese culture and Quebec culture. A nostalgic text in which the lyrics of songs by Richard Séguin and Gerry Boulet appear, the poetry of the Persian poet Omar Khayyam and a few spaces in which the two languages waltz in a natural way. A sensitive and luminous novel, a tribute to the author’s adopted country.
