Almost half of the French departments have abandoned the 80 km/h limit to return to 90 km/h. Viktor Frédéric presents the consequences of this decision on the set of 19/20, Monday 1er august.

In France, many departments have decided to reinstate the speed limit at 90 km/h rather than 80 km/h. “By the end of the year, 45 departments will be officially back to 90 km/h for all or part of their road network“, details journalist Viktor Frédéric, present on the set of 19/20, Monday August 1. These territories are often rural and they had criticized the lowering of the speed.

Depending on the departments, the situations are different. “Aveyron, for example, has gone back to 90 km / h on all its departmental roads, compared to only 1% of the roads in Haut-Rhin, i.e. 16 small kilometers“, explains the journalist. According to road safety, the lowering to 80 km/h would have saved 349 lives during the first 20 months of its implementation. “If we look at the figures for 2021, road mortality in the departments which have maintained this limitation has fallen by more than 16% in two years. While it has risen to the same level as in 2019 in the departments which have returned to 90 km / h“, concludes Viktor Frédéric.
