“There is no longer any realistic prospect of conviction.” British prosecutors announced on Thursday, September 5, that they were dropping the sexual assault charges brought in 2022 in the United Kingdom against disgraced Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein. The prosecution was authorized in June 2022. “following a review of the evidence gathered by the Metropolitan Police in its investigation”explained at the time the British public prosecutor’s officeThe London police indicated that the complainant is now in her fifties.
Harvey Weinstein was sentenced in 2020 to 23 years in prison for a sexual assault in 2006 and a rape in 2013. But this conviction was overturned by the New York Court of Appeals in April on the grounds of procedural errors. A new trial was ordered and set for November 12. This court decision sparked outrage within the #MeToo movement, even as Harvey Weinstein remains incarcerated on a separate 16-year rape sentence in California.
