Harold LeBel’s victim wants to reveal his name

The victim of ex-MP Harold LeBel wishes to reveal his identity. She sent this week a request to lift the publication ban that protects her.

In an affidavit sent to the Superior Court, the latter wrote that she “wishes to be able to discuss publicly and openly [son] experience through the justice system”. The decision, she says, is “well thought out, informed and voluntary.”

The publication ban applied so far to the identity of the victim has not yet been lifted. A judge will first have to render a decision in this regard. The Court will sit Thursday in Rimouski. His opinion should arrive in April.

Former Rimouski MP Harold LeBel, who sat for more than six years under the Parti Québécois, will soon be released from prison after being released on parole for a quarter of his sentence for sexual assault. He was convicted after a two-week trial last year.

Before judge and jury, the victim recounted having been kissed without warning, then forcibly entered one night in October 2017, at the home of Mr. LeBel. In January, Judge Serge Francoeur accepted the joint proposal of eight months in prison from the Crown and the defense.
