The French consume 4,000 tons of frog legs per year. They are mainly imported from Indonesia and Vietnam except that some species are threatened. Associations sound the alarm.

It’s unlike anything I’ve ever eaten. It’s really unique like tastetestifies an American tourist. Passing through France, she has just tasted frog legs. This traditional dish of French customers is still consumed. But this consumption is considered problematic according to some environmentalists. Most frog legs consumed in France are imported: they come from Turkey, where they are on the verge of extinction, from Vietnam and especially from Indonesia.

In Indonesia, their massive capture in the wild has disastrous effects on the environment. Frogs are very large consumers of insects, in particular insect pests of crops, but also mosquitoes, which are vectors for the spread of disease, so countries are seeing more and more use of toxic pesticides to mitigate the absence of frogs“, believes Charlotte Nithartspokesperson for the Robin Hood association. The associations are therefore calling for stricter control or even a cessation of exports of certain endangered species.
